Project: Modern Magazines Project Canada is a collaborative initiative that brings together scholars, magazine professionals, and digitization specialists with the goal of building an international and interdisciplinary network for the study and promotion of periodicals. This project will build toward long-term partnerships and collaborations focused on magazines and the digital turn.
Deliverables: ModMag began with a workshop, “Magazines and/as Media,” held August 15-16 2014, and “Canadian Magazines: Past, Present, Future,” the public symposium that concluded the workshop. The papers presented at this workshop will be published in joint special issues of English Studies in Canada and the Journal of Modern Periodical Studies.
The project was occasioned by the University of Alberta Libraries’ Digital Initiatives group, and Peel’s Prairie Provinces digital collection, digitizing the complete run of The Western Home Monthly, a Winnipeg-based magazine published 1899-1932. Articles on the digitization can be found at the ModMag blog. I have also written an article for Archives and Manuscripts on digital remediation entitled “Remediation as reading: digitising The Western Home Monthly.”
